Listing to and giving instructions
Purpose:
To give students the opportunity to listen and apply instructions. In addition to that, they will learn how to give applicable instructions.
Materials:
- "Let's Draw" handout - Two "Secret Pictures" - Handout with a large box for students to draw in - Students should have pencils
Class:
Oral I
Procedure:
The "Let's Draw" handout should have four large empty boxes on an A4 size paper. The boxes should be labeled from A to D. At the end of the worksheet, there should be a vocabulary section with a variety of shapes such as a square, triangle, oval, circle, wavy line, dotted line, rectangle, straight line. Box A should be labeled with the different parts of the box, such as the top line, center, left side, right side, top left corner, bottom left corner, and so on.
Class should begin by reviewing the vocabulary. The ALT and JTE should work together to explain the vocabulary. Horizontal, vertical and diagonal should also be explained. It helps to draw lines on the board and have the students write down the meaning. I prefer have the students write this portion down because the material is typically new to them. After taking notes on the newest terms, I hold a ruler in the positions and have the class tell me whether its horizontal, vertical or diagonal. It gets everyone comfortable with the vocabulary. It is also important to go over the terms in box A. After that, I take out "Secret Picture" number one. The "Secret Picture" is just a simple picture I drew in a box using the shapes and lines from the new vocabulary. The picture is hidden from the class and the JTE describes the picture. The students listen and draw what is described in box B. After that, they get into pairs and draw their own pictures in box C. They hide their pictures and describe it to their partner. Each partner draws the description of their partners picture in box D. The JTE and ALT walk around and listen as the students work together. They also help the students if they need it.
Once this worksheet is finished, pass out the last handout with the large empty box. Then take out "Secret Picture" number two. This picture should be much more complicated than the first one. The ALT should describe this picture and the students should listen and draw. This final picture should challenge them after having the opportunity to practice.
