ALT Team Teaching Lesson Plan 2005
Classroom English

Purpose :
To use as interactive activity in which students can learn how to ask for information when they do not understand what was said.

Materials :
Listening worksheet
Classroom English worksheet
Vocabulary cards

Procedure :
First the listening worksheet is handed out. The ALT will read a paragraph aloud and the students are supposed to fill in the blanks as they listen. Instead of making it easy to understand the ALT should read quickly. The students are a little shocked at first because the words are difficult and the pace is fast. Do not expect them to be able to keep up at this point, instead smile and create a relaxed atmosphere to let them know they shouldn't worry. At this point they normally find the situation funny. The purpose of that first step is to show them why they need classroom English and for them to apply what they learn at the end of the activity.
The students are put into groups of four. It helps to tell them to put their desks together. Each group gets one set of vocabulary cards and each individual gets a Classroom English worksheet. First the ALT can explain the important questions that are listed at the top of the worksheet. The JTE can further clarify. Then the JTE and ALT can perform an example of how the activity is done. One person has a vocabulary card and the other person should ask questions about the word on their partner's card. Since they are in groups of four they can all take turns asking questions about the word on the card and writing down the answers. After performing an example the JTE and ALT can work together to explain further. Then the students begin the activity.
Once the activity is completed everyone can again attempt to fill out the listening activity sheet while the ALT reads aloud. But before starting the JTE should let the students know that they can interrupt and ask questions of the ALT if they need clarification. When the paragraph from the listening activity is being read the students should raise their hands and use the classroom English they just learned to clarify what is being read. This way they are able to practice what they just learned.
